The Beechworth Bakery Award
Swinburne University of Technology, Lilydale

The Beechworth Bakery Award is an award to build recognition in the community of learning difficulties and to celebrate the contribution to the community of those who have learning difficulties.

The award was launched in collaboration with  The Beechworth Bakery and Swinburne University, Higher Education Lilydale, Learning Difficulties Project.

 The Learning Difficulties Project
The Learning Difficulties Project was established in 2001 by Dr. Everarda Cunningham and Nola Firth. The aim of the project is to undertake research in regard to learning difficulties, develop programs and resources for teachers and students and develop initiatives that facilitate dissemination of knowledge about learning difficulties throughout the wider community.

What is meant by ‘Learning Difficulties'?
In the Learning Difficulties Project ‘learning difficulties' refers to those people who have average or above average general ability yet under-perform in one or more academic areas. These people have processing difficulties (e.g., difficulties with short term memory, analysis of sounds or spatial relationships) that make it difficult for them to learn some aspects of literacy and/or numeracy such as reading, spelling or areas of mathematics such as tables recall.

Do you know someone who has succeeded in their career despite learning difficulties (sometimes called dyslexia)?
If that person has average or above general ability but difficulty with reading, spelling or maths and has succeeded in their career they can be nominated for the Beechworth Bakery Award.
