Kinder August Print E-mail
Written by Tom

Now we're into September, but we've just been through August and thats our second quietest month, with February being the quietest. So for quite a few years now we have Kinder month in August. It makes things chaotic in the bakehouse and really breaks the pattern.

We invite Kindergarten groups from all around our region to bring the children into the bakery where all the kids get to make their own biscuits and a loaf of bread which they get to take home. Lots of parents come along as well and they love it as much as the kids. It is a great marketing tool for the Bakery.

I gotta tell you though that our bakehouse is sure not set up for tours, but we manage. We really try and make it special for the kids. These kids are our future, so we need them to have a connection with the bakey, we need to get them used to coming into our shop. These baking tours do make a lot of work for us, but we believe it is worth it.

The Streaker Print E-mail

A first for me happened this week.

Here I was up on stage doing a fundraiser talk for the Beechworth Montessori group in Wodonga last Thursday night, flat out speaking as I usually am, when a streaker came running into the hall. He was totally naked and just stood there with a silly look on his face, he just looked around the room, then turned and ran out the door again.

Well I was lost for words!!......  I looked at my co host, John Walker and we both just burst out laughing and so did the whole audience. It was the most bizarre thing that I had ever encountered while on stage. The next day I was asked if it had been a set up, well I sure didn't set it up!

The streaker sure added that little bit extra, but it was only  very little!! It was a great night though and managed to raise over two thousand  and a half dollars for the Montessori group.

Donuts Print E-mail

Here's some photos that we took on the last day of our annual Donut Week. It was quite something because all the staff were encouraged to come to work on that day dressed as their favourite super hero.

For many years we've celebrated Donut Week by doing all sorts of varieties of donuts. Lots of colours and different fillings. Donut  Week really breaks the pattern for our staff and get everyone out of their comfort zone, plus our customers enjoy the variety and the buzz it creates.

It's another thing that the Beechworth Bakery does every year.

We can all say we are too busy, or we have too many staff on holidays. We can put up every excuse why we can't do something, It's so easy doing the same old thing every day.

Take a risk. Have a go!

Christine & I recently became grandparents for the fourth time on Saturday the 11th of August 2007 with the arrival of Hamish Francis Wynne Jenkins at 3.20am.

We looked after the 3 older children Adelaide, Lloyd & Keagan for 2 nights over the weekend to help Sharon & Adam (Sharon came home from hospital on the same day as giving birth) settle into home with Hamish.

Sharon and Adam liive in Beechworth, so we get to see heaps of the grandkids. You need lots of energy and patience when looking after these small children who are almost 2, 3 and almost 5 years (next week), yes that's 4 children in just under 5 years!!

They are great parents and great kids, we are very blessed.

Swinburne award Print E-mail

Home again and back on deck and boy lots to do!

This week I had a great time presenting The Beechworth Bakery award at Swinburne University at Lilydale.
It is the second year that we've sponsored this event.

These awards were set up to recognize and reward people who have really achieved, even though they have had a learning difficulty. People who in there younger years, went through hell at school (bit like me). Their teachers just thought they were lazy or just dumb, but today they now realize that they were suffering from dyyslexiaor other learning disabilities .

After reading the really moving stories of the winner and runners up, you would have to say that they were all gifted. This years winner was Michael Faulkner, who is now a highly successful business person. The runners up were Colleen Sweet and Amanda Lear.

The evening was a real feel good night and I was very proud that the Beechworth Bakery was part of it.

Alcatraz Print E-mail

Alcatraz is a top tourist attraction and a must see when you visit San Francisco. I would recommend taking the tour to anyone, it’s way more than just a jail.

There is so much history, the birds and the gardens, plus the view of San Francisco from there (on a fine day) is fantastic.

You take yourself on a guided tour using audio headsets. The audio is done by ex prisoners and prison officers who spent time  or worked at Alcatraz. They share there own personal stories and experiences. You hear all the recreated sounds of how the jail would have been. You can take as much or as little time as you like, reading the history  about some of the prisons famous inmates etc.

It was  bloody good!

This was our second visit to Alcatraz, the last time we were there was 16years ago. It is more popular than ever and you need to book the tour at least 1-2 days before you plan to visit.
