Don't mess with the pies! |

I have been in business for 34 years and I have
made many mistakes.
One big one that we made was buying in our pies
from Melbourne. Our CEO at the time worked out that we would make lots more
money. Well our staff (and myself) were devastated, even though they were made
to our recipe, it just wasn't right.
In a small town like Beechworth, everyone knows
everything and the townsfolk were not happy either. It was one of the dumbest
things I have seen done. Today we make all our own pies again and they are
fantastic, our staff are happy selling them and our customers are loving them.
On a recent long weekend, we sold as many pies in one day as we did for the
entire long weekend the year before. We have
built this business on "If you wouldn't buy it...don't try and sell it".
The moral of the story is don't let the dollars
rule all of your decisions.

My wife (Christine) and I were invited to Derby Day
at Flemington in the Birdcage with Lexus last weekend.
What a great day, we really enjoyed ourselves and
It was the first time that I had ever been to the races in Melbourne. It was
even better because we were doing it in style in the Lexus double storey marquee
with 2 bars, a barista on hand all day to make beautiful coffee's and delicious
food... How could you not have a good day!
Lexus does it well, with that eye for detail. They
even picked us up in the city and drove us to the races and were on hand at the
end of the day to take us back. It was 1st class service and it was really
appreciated.
Talk about customer service and that little bit
extra!!!

Had a customer bail me up the other day, he loves
our bakery cookbook, but said the recipe for the banana cake doesn't work.
I have since looked at the recipe and have realised
that somehow the butter had been left our of the recipe, either by us or when it
went to print. Luckily we are updating the cookbook at the moment
and will have a banana cake recipe that works........thank goodness he gave me
the feedback and we are able to fix the problem!
The cookbook has sold very well and we get lots of
letters from customers telling us about the success's they have had with the
recipe's. The updated book will have about 7 or 8 new recipes added to it, which
will be great.

Buying a suit |

We were in Sydney last week and my wife Christine wanted me to buy another suit...
First we went into a big upmarket department store. Well that was a big mistake, because I seemed invisible to all the staff. In the end Christine got one of the 3 staff (all busy amongst themselves) to try and help me. Not that he was of much help......here they were with probably a thousand suits in stock, but were not interested in selling me one.
The assistant did get me to try on a couple, but it wasn't fun and he did not make me feel very confident in what he was showing me.
We looked at heaps by ourselves, while the staff just kept busy talking to each other. There were probably 8-10 staff on the floor, but none really wanted to help.
It was no good so we gave up and went to a small shop, where I got service and made the decision and bought a suit in about 6 minutes, what a difference!!

The shit really hit the fan in Echuca a few weeks
ago when Kenny visited the Beechworth Bakery Echuca!!
He sure got things running and had everyone excited, he was
flat out for about an hour and a half signing autographs for customers and
staff. While he was there he checked out the bakers in the
bakehouse, he was great value and a real nice bloke.
The team at Echuca are doing a terrific job, I get
great feedback from lots of people who have visited there. They are making
thousands of pies each week to supply themselves as well as our Bendigo,
Ballarat and Healesville stores, they are very proud of their product and it
shows in everything they make.
I was in Echuca last week and Glen &
Meredith got me to do a talk for the team there, talk about speaking to the
converted, I felt like a fraud.....they know lots more than me!!
The night was also a celebration for the bakery
as it had just won a customer service award in the local business awards,
beating a couple of the big clubs in town!Glenn & Meredith also gave a couple of
employee awards to Di & Carol who had both clocked up over 5 years working
for us, Carol has been with us from day one.

Healesville Beechworth Bakery just celebrated its 1st Birthday
at the end of September. Christine & myself went down there on the
Sunday for the celebrations and what a terrific day it was, with lots of fun had
by all, there were lots of happy customers as well as happy staff.
Matt and his team had live music and a clown who
was very entertaining, Keith Mc handing out lots of samples to our customers and
all the staff were dressed as clowns as well.
It was a great day and I was very proud to be
there. The feedback from the customers was fantastic, with lots of locals
supporting us as well as visitors.
We have also just celebrated our 6th Birthday in
Echuca............How time flies!!!!!!
